Introduction
Introduction
Range Rovers are equipped with
disc brakes all round. Front discs are 298.17mm
(11.75") diameter (solid discs up to October
1989, vented from then onwards) and rears are
290.0mm (11.42") diameter. Rear discs on all
models are solid. ABS was fitted to Vogue SE models
from 1990 onwards as standard, and was available as
an option on other models.
Uprated Brakes
We have 3 kits available for uprating the Range
Rover's braking system, depending on the year of the
vehicle and whether just the front, or the front
& rear, are to be improved. All of the kits
contain grooved (handed) discs - ventilated at the
front and solid at the rear - and carbon/kevlar
brake pads. To complement our uprated brake kits,
but also suitable for standard brakes, we stock
stainless steel braided brake hoses, which improve
brake line pressure and brake pedal feel.
Important
Imperial & Metric threads - 1970 to 1989
The threads in the brake system of early (1970 to
approx. 1984) Range Rovers are imperial (UNF). In
1984, calipers were changed to metric threads.
Although similar in appearance, the two threads
cannot be mixed; therefore, it is important to
identify the type fitted to your vehicle before
ordering replacement parts:
Imperial threads. Front axle suffixes A,B,C,D &
E and rear axle to suffix C, use imperial threads.
(1970 to approx. 1984).
Metric threads. Front axle suffix F and rear axle
suffix D (approx. 1984) onwards use metric threads.
In addition, metric threads are marked with the
letter M on one of the flats at the base of the
threads. Finally, with the introduction of metric
threads, a new Lockheed master cylinder was fitted,
incorporating an integral PDWA & warning switch.
Imperial & Metric threads - 1990 onwards
With the introduction of vented front discs from VIN
GA (October 1989), imperial threads were again used
in the brake calipers. In 1994, these were changed
to metric.

EBC Turbo Groove Brake Discs
Advantages
• 'Blind'
degassing holes reduce chance of stress cracks, common with
'through drilling'.
• Full
sweep wide scraper grooves help deglaze pads, reduce fade
and promote parallel pad wear during use.
• Grooves
extended to outer diameter allow exit of dust, grit etc from
braking area. (grooves that stop short only capture dust and
grit and cause disc marking)
• Zinc
plate and gold passivate finish improves cosmetic appearance
beneath alloys and prevents corrosion on areas not swept by
the pad.
• Premium
quality British made product, TUV approved, x-ray inspected
and balanced.
• This
disc configuration used with Kevlar pads will virtually
eliminate brake fade by breaking down the surface gases
produced by hot pads thus helping the pad remain in
effective contact with the disc.
• This
disc pad combination gives the ultimate braking performance
from a standard system.
For
improving the braking ability of your Range Rover when
performance and/or handling improvements have been carried
out, we have the following Uprated Brake Kits available.

Brake Hoses
Brake hoses
are available as standard (ie rubber) type or stainless
steel braided type. Stainless braided hoses have a smaller
internal diameter, which increases the brake fluid pressure.
In addition, the stainless outer braiding improves pedal
feel by preventing the hose from bulging.

Electronic
traction control (ETC) was introduced in October 1992 on ABS-equipped
vehicles. ETC works in conjunction with the ABS - on the
rear wheels only - by applying brake pressure to the
spinning wheel, thereby transferring drive to the opposite
wheel.
